BMS (bio-metal surface) stents with an implanted highly elastic nano-structured tantalum layer.
Normal stainless steel stents can cause inflammatory and rejection reactions, allergies, tissue growth and thrombosis. Nanostructured tantalum composite stents, by contrast, show excellent tissue compatibility, haemocompatibility, high expansion, optimal surface properties, biocompatibility and moderate X-ray visibility.
Further advantages of the BMS stent are the elasticity of the coating and the durability of its smooth surface. At the time of implantation the stent is stretched by about 4 times its diameter. The surface has to survive this procedure without developing cracks.
