Test stands

AS A SPECIALIST IN CUSTOMIZED MOTOR TEST SYSTEMS (CMTS), MAGTROL HAS DEVELOPED A CUSTOMIZED MOUNTING SYSTEM TO FACILITATE TESTING OF OPEN-FRAME MOTORS, ALSO KNOWN AS «FRAMELESS MOTORS».

FEATURES

  • Load test system designed specifically for frameless motor testing
  • Adjustable fixture for fast, precise alignment
  • Modular mounting system adaptable to the various motor models to be tested
  • Integrated dynamometer controller and power analyzer
  • Dedicated M-TEST software for measurement and analysis
  • Turnkey, compact and mobile solution

The uniqueness of this test bench lies in the type of motors tested, namely open-frame (or frameless) electric motors. This type of motor, consisting of a stator and a rotor without bearings or shafts, is mainly used in a compressor for its heat exchanger or in robotics. Although they have many qualities, frameless motors are difficult to test when not mounted in their final configuration. In the absence of its classic mounting frame, the motor must nevertheless be able to be placed in a physical configuration that will enable it to be tested.

This type of motor, consisting of a stator and a rotor without bearings or shafts, is mainly used in a compressor for its heat exchanger or in robotics.

Magtrol now offers a modular solution which not only allows the motor to be positioned, but also, to make the alignment adjustments required for perfect testing. By the means of a slide system, the motor can be moved precisely in all 3 directions. These high-quality slides enable precise manual adjustment, and their mechanical strength ensures the rigidity required for proper testing.

The motor mounting system allows a variety of models to be fitted by means of an adapter ring. This ring can be quickly interchanged and is upgradeable. The entire mounting system is ergonomically designed for rapid motor model changeover.

The mechanical part of the test bench is completed by a WB Series – Eddy-Current dynamometer and a TM 300 Series – Torque Sensor; these two components are essential for closed-loop test sequences. The whole unit is secured by protection doors with safety switches that keep personnel safe from harm and safeguarding process.

An electronic control system, built into a standard 19» cabinet, controls the test bench. The integrated electronics, which include a DSP 7000 Dynamometer Controller and a Yokogawa power analyzer, offer a wide range of measurement options.

Magtrol’s easy-to-use M-TEST Software centralizes system management, enabling the user to quickly define test parameters and sequences (torque, speed, curve, closed/open loop). Generated data can be stored, displayed and printed as tables, graphs or universal data reports, and can easily be imported into a spreadsheet. This enables clear, professional reporting.

Five testing lines, mounted side by side on a common table, allow for easy and fast testing of electric motor parameters. The Motor Under Test (MUT) is held in place by a concentric quick-change fastener, mounted on sliding rails to allow precise positioning in front of each testing station.

At the 1st line, a CTS 100 Cogging Test System allows the measurement of friction and cogging torque through a TS 100 Torque Sensor (50 mN·m; encoder 5000 PPR - Pulse per Revolution; index 1 PPR). At this station, the MUT (not powered) is slowly driven (speed 1 ... 10 rpm) and the torque versus angle position is recorded, allowing precise measurements of the motor magnet’s effect around 360° of rotation with torque detection better than 1 mN·m of resolution. Linear or Polar as well as FFT graphs can be displayed or printed.

In order to keep the angular position, the MUT remains connected to the TS Series Torque Sensor and both move along the sliding rails to the 2nd station for Back-EMF testing . At this step, the tested sample is driven ≤10000 rpm, while current and tension of Back-EMF (Back Electromagnetic Forces) are recorded. Testing software correlates Cogging versus Back-EMF system at the same angle position.

The platform that supports the motor under test is then disconnected from the torque sensor and can move to the next testing stations which have their own torque and speed measuring capabilities.

The 3 remaining test lines are equipped with different dynamometers for load performance testing of the Motor Under Test. The dynamometers execute loading profiles while torque, speed, current, tension and temperature (amongst other parameters) are recorded, allowing the calculation of Input/Output Power and issue Efficiency Curves of the motor. This specific Customized Motor Test System (CMTS) is composed of an HD 106 Hysteresis Dynamometer (18mN·m; 7W; ≤30000 rpm), a WB23 Eddy-Current Dynamometer (80 mN·m; 500 W; ≤100000 rpm) and a 4 WB 2.7 Eddy-Current Dynamometer (0.6N·m; 1kW; ≤50000 rpm). This customized combination allows a wide range of the customer’s devices to be tested. Each test line can be activated by a switch selector on the system’s front panel as well as configurated through the software.

The test bench integrates a high-end 4 channel Zimmer LMG 641 power analyzer, with precision current sensors. In the 3 last testing stations, the device under test is powered by a DC power supply integrated in the bench and controlled by the software. The DSP 7001 controller provides a closed loop regulation either in torque or speed mode along the testing profile.

Easy to use, Magtrol M-Test Software controls the system and enables the user to quickly set test parameters and sequences in torque or speed control, curve mode, closed loop or open loop. Test setups can be saved and recalled any time. It allows the acquisition of complete testing data (torque, speed, current, efficiency, power input, power output, temperature, resistance), temperature rise and related data during motor operation. M-TEST Software has the flexibility to test a variety of motors in a multitude of configurations. The data generated from this user-friendly program can be stored, displayed and printed in tabular, graphical formats or universal data reports and is easily imported into a spreadsheet. Clear and professional reports can be issued.

The Customized Motor Test System includes protection covers with safety switches preventing the system to run while the doors are open. A continuity testing has been conducted for assuring the appropriate grounding of each device, in compliance with the highest European Health & Safety regulation.

This realization shows large Magtrol’s competencies and flexibilities to supply high-end state of the art Motor Test Benches according to specific customer needs.

COGGING TEST SYSTEM

septembre 18, 2019

Other measuring systems
The drag torque or Detent Torque is an important parameter in permanent magnet (PM) motors, especially in a PM servo motor system. Detent Torque of PM motors is composed of Cogging Torque and Friction Torque. The Cogging Torque is generated by attraction/interaction of the magnetic poles to the teeth (steel structure) within an un-energized motor. It is one of the most important parameters of permanent magnet motors, which causes torque ripple, vibration and noise.

To measure this parameters, Magtrol introduced its 2nd generation of CTS COGGING TEST SYSTEM with the following system features:
-       Measure of Detent Torque, Cogging Torque and Friction Torque
-       Torque Detection < 1 mN·m
-       Rated torque 50 / 100 / 200 mNm (other range available on demand).
-       Accuracy 0.1% / 0.2% of rated torque ▪ Precise Angle Detection 5000 pulses/rev.
-       Operating speed 1 to 10rpm ▪ Operating Direction CW / CCW ▪ USB Interface ▪ Executable Specific Cogging Test Software
-       Peak Detection
-       X-Y, Polar and FFT Graphs
-       Multigraphs function with up to 5 curves comparison
-       Data Acquisition and Storage in TXT (Export in CSV files possible)

The test System includes a precision geared motor, a TS torque sensor integrating a 5000 pulses encoder and security clutches to avoid system overload by mishandling when not in use. The geared motor drives the MUT (Motor Under Test) at low speed of 1 to 10rpm, while acquiring its cogging torque related to angle position. The torque measurement covers a range up to 200mN∙m (depending on the selected torque sensor) with an accuracy of ±0.1 mN∙m (for TS100 with 50mN∙m of nominal range). An executable software control the system realizing the measurement and data acquisition. It provides accurate peak-to-peak measurement of cogging torque and displays X-Y or polar graphs as well as FFT analysis. It allows the storage of the measured data enabling to compare performance graphs by overlaying up to 5 graphs. A cursor can be used to read accurate values from measurement points. Measured parameters can be saved under TXT. For better accuracy and function control, the software includes a 0 offset adjustment routine which check transducer signal over a complete turn (Test sample MUT not connected to the system).

As stand-alone system, the CTS only requires a 100-220VAC power. USB interface allows direct connection to the PC on which the software is installed. It is mounted on a PT-25 grooved base on which the motor fixture can be fitted. Vertical mounting bracket are available as an option, allowing to mount the system in vertical position, which is particularly recommended for very low measuring values. The system can easily be scaled up or down (50 / 100 ( 200 mNm), simply by replacing the TS torque sensor which is mounted in front of the unit. The software will recognize the torque sensor being in use and will automatically adapt its measuring range.
