A photocoupler optically links, via a transparent isolating material, an infrared LED and a photodetector within one housing. Usually this detector is a phototransistor or a photodiode with some additional amplifiers. These devices are used for galvanic separation and protection of the inputs of microcontrollers. The couplers are approved according to the most important safety approvals like VDE or UL.
