Non-Thermal plasma for deodorization of solvents in waste air streams
The non-thermal plasma process (NT) is an alternative system to a combustion plant for the reduction of hydrocarbon emissions in waste air. This process is energy-efficient and cost-effective. The system offers the options of either conveying the waste air stream directly through the plasma modules (see figure below) or mixing the waste air with additionally-induced ambient air which requires activation. It is advantageous when employed for applications with low pollutant concentrations (< 1g/m³).
The radicals generated in the plasma modules split the pollutants. Oxidation caused by activated oxygen in the air usually follows. Energy consumption is controlled as required in relation to varying pollutant concentrations. This process also splits extremely stable compounds. Experience gained to date from installations shows that reaction paths may vary for different waste gas compositions. The plasma process should be adapted to suit specific waste gas conditions.
A mobile pilot plant was constructed for this reason to carry out degradation tests on the actual waste air produced on site. The knowledge gained from these preliminary tests provides the basis for realizing optimum processes for individual applications.
The pilot plant and all necessary components are mounted on a trailer which can be drawn by a car. The plant (see View into pilot plant with plasma reactors illustration at upper right) can thus be used to conduct degradation tests on the actual waste gas at the customer’s facility.
