“ Molex's eSATA provides greater speed and better connection for external storage solution in computer and consumer applications and includes cable assembly and through hole bottom mount plug. ”
External drives that use USB or 1394 interface are basically IDE in nature. The data transfer is achieved via a conversion chip that translates the ATA interface protocol of the disk drive to the USB or 1394 protocol. This will affect the host buses efficiency and CPU utilization. For user who performs extensive back-ups frequently, this would be very time consuming. The eSATA storage bus is much more efficient and cost effective as it does not require a protocol translation chip.
Molex's eSATA design addresses both the mechanical and grounding concerns. Retention features such as spring clips are added on the receptacle to enhance the retention force when mated with the detents of the cable-end connector. The flanges on the end of the connector provide good grounding to the chassis of the application. To prevent the misuse of internal SATA cables with this eSATA, the L shaped key is removed and the guide features are vertically offset and reduced in size. One other change is the insertion depth is increased thus the contacts are mounted further back. This helps prevent ESD damage. The EMI protection, along with meeting the FCC and CE emission requirements, are ensured with an extra layer of shielding on the cable.
Molex is an active member of the Serial ATA International Organization (SATA-IO), which is responsible for developing and specifying Serial ATA interconnect standards.
