Photo reflectors consist of one infrared LED and a phototransistor. Unlike photo interrupters, these are mounted side by side within one package. Should an object be above the sensor, the light emitted by the LED will be reflected and scattered back to the phototransistor. The amount of light scattered back is strongly dependent upon the reflected material and the distance between the sensor and the reflecting surface. It is therfore necessary to consider operational conditions, tolerances and disturbing light influence when designing the circuit. The photo reflectors with lenses permit a higher lateral resolution.
